Cumulative Update 7 for System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 has been released by Microsoft !

Cumulative Update 7 contains a number of fixes for Operations Manager 2007 R2, as well as all of the fixes from Operations Manager 2007 R2 CU6. A number of fixes may require manual steps to install.

Issues that are fixed in Cumulative Update 7

Cumulative Update 7 for System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 fixes the following issues:

• Console performs poorly when User Roles are used to scope object access.
• Availability data is not shown for the current day when daily aggregation is used.
• Behavior is inconsistent between some views on web console and console.
• Log files do not roll over when the Unicode log file is monitored.
• Several security issues are fixed.

Cumulative Update 7 for System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 fixes the following cross-platform issues:

• Logical disk performance statistics are not collected for some volume types on Solaris computers.
• Some Network Adapters on HP-UX computers may not be discovered.
• Network adapter performance statistics are not collected for HP-UX network adapters.
• The Solaris 8 and 9 agent may not restart after an ungraceful shutdown.

[OpsMgr 2012] Deploying Cumulative Update Rollup 3 (CU3) for Operations Manager 2012

Kevin Greene has published one month ago a post that explain all the steps required to deploy the Update Rollup 3 hotfix to your SCOM / OpsMgr 2012 deployment. As in the past, this post is an updated version of his previous post on deploying Update Rollup 2 (CU2) to SCOM / OpsMgr 2012.

The process to deploy the update is quite simple. Similar to Update Rollup 2, there is no need to run any SQL queries against the SCOM databases as part of the update - as was the case with the SCOM 2007 R2 CU's. You can choose to deploy this update either manually or by using Microsoft Update. This post will outline the manual installation process.

Overview

The Windows Server Operating System management pack consists of the following five management packs: Microsoft Windows Server Library, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Discovery, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Monitoring, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, and Microsoft Windows 2000 Server. The Microsoft Windows Server management packs monitor the performance, health, and availability of Windows Server 2008, 2008 R2, 2003, 2003 R2 and Windows 2000 Server.

By detecting, alerting on, and automatically responding to critical events and performance indicators, these management packs reduce resolution times for issues and increase the overall availability and performance of your systems running the Windows Server operating systems, thereby helping to reduce the total cost of ownership.

• Key Operating System Services: Required services are checked for status (for example, running, not running, or paused)
• Storage: Logical hard drives are checked for availability, sufficient free space, and integrity of the NTFS partition.
• Network: Network adapters are checked for connection health, name and IP address conflicts.

• Processor: System processor(s) performance is checked system-wide. Processors can optionally be monitored on a per processor basis.
• Memory: Memory consisting of physical memory and virtual memory (also known as page files) is monitored using the following performance indicators:
• Available memory (in MB)
• Pages per second
• Page file percent usage
• Disks and Partitions: Logical disks/partitions and physical disks are monitored, and performance data is collected for average disk seconds per read, disk seconds per write, and disk seconds per transfer. Monitoring is also provided for fragmentation of logical disks. Depending on which version of the operating system is being monitored, either logical or physical monitoring is enabled by default. Refer to the MP guide for more detail.
• Network Adapter: Network adapters are monitored for the number of bytes received per second, the number of bytes sent per second, and the total bytes per second. In addition, the health state of the network adapter is evaluated and is set to Healthy if connected and Critical if disconnected.

  The following should be considered when importing the management packs into a management group which does not have OpsMgr SP1 installed:
  
  • The Library, Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003 specific management packs can be imported into a management group that does not have OpsMgr 2007 SP1.

Overview

Operations Manager 2007 R2 Connectors provide Operations Manager 2007 R2 alert forwarding to remote systems, such as an Enterprise Management System (EMS) or a service desk system. After Operations Manager 2007 R2 forwards an alert to a remote system, that alert data is synchronized throughout the lifetime of the alert. The result of that data synchronization is a robust and seamless systems management environment. Such an environment enables cross-organization support processes to take advantage of the resources and strengths of formerly independent support groups. The ultimate effect is improved enterprise systems health through improved organizational communication.

Sharing data between Operations Manager 2007 R2 and remote systems enables enterprise correlation of events from Windows-based systems, hardware, network, and UNIX and Linux systems. Correlating these events allows IT staff to determine the causes of issues and reduce the time to resolution of IT outages.

Synchronization of data between Operations Manager 2007 R2 and remote systems also enables operational groups to use familiar management interfaces. Users update an alert by using their management tool, and the data is updated in tools that are used by other operational groups.

Feature Summary:
This updated release includes all features that were in the previous update release (KB975774) and additional fixes in this release:

• Fixes for the following issues (in previous release KB975774):
• Potential high CPU usage of HP OVO Event Consumer for Windows (scinteropd.exe)
• The Scinteropd.exe process of HP OVO Event Consumer for Windows sometimes increases CPU usage to a very high level. This problem occurs only in System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Connectors for HP Operations Manager on Windows. It occurs in all language versions of the connectors.
• Synchronization issue in HP OVO Connector
• HP Operations Manager and System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 may be in an asynchronous state when alerts are forwarded that have already been resolved. Open events are still present in HP Operations Manager even though the corresponding alerts in System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 are already resolved.
• Remedy connectors do not populate the Computer Name and Domain fields
• When an alert is forwarded from System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 to Remedy, the Computer Name field and the Domain field are left blank in the Remedy notes field. This issue occurs in the release version of System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Connector for Remedy 6.3 and Remedy 7.1.
• Unresponsiveness of the Interop provider when an Enterprise Management Service (EMS) API call returns an error
• The Interop provider may stop responding and not recover when an API calls to the EMS and returns an error.
  
  Note Usually, the API calls to Remedy.
  
  This issue typically occurs when large localized text strings in the Custom Field Alert properties are forwarded to Remedy. However, it can also occur with other properties.
• Additional issues addressed in this release:
• Added Support for Remedy 7.5
• This update enables support for Remedy 7.5 with the Operations Manager 2007 R2 Connector for Remedy.
• Added Support for HP Operations Manager for UNIX v9
• This update enables support for HP Operations Manager for UNIX v9 with the Operations Manager 2007 R2 Connector for HP Operations Manager. The Connector supports HP Operations Manager for UNIX v9 on the following platforms:
• HPUX 11i v3 Itanium
• Solaris 10 SPARC
• RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.2 x64
• Incorrect dates are passed to the remote system by the connector
• The Connector performs an incorrect date conversion and forwards the incorrect date to the remote system.
• Product Knowledge is not forwarded when the locale is Canadian English
• If the locale on the Operations Manager server is set to Canadian English, the Product Knowledge will not be forwarded from Operations Manager to remote system, even if it is configured to do so.

Cumulative Update 6 for Operations Manager 2007 R2 resolves the following cross-platform issues:

• The installation process for the IBM AIX 6.1 agent incorrectly checks for AIX 5.3 packages.
• After a system restart, the OpsMgr agent for Solaris may start to run before local file systems are mounted.
• On Red Hat Linux version 4 and SUSE Linux version 9, LVM disks are not discovered and cannot be monitored.
• The OpsMgr agent for AIX does not report the arguments for monitored processes.
• When Microsoft security update MS12-006 is installed on an OpsMgr management server, that management server can no longer communicate with the OpsMgr agent on any Linux or UNIX server.
• On HP-UX, OpsMgr cannot discover and monitor a logical volume that is composed of more than 127 physical volumes.

Cumulative Update 6 for Operations Manager 2007 R2 adds the following cross-platform features:

• Support for IBM AIX 7.1 (POWER).
• Support for Oracle Solaris 11 (x86 and SPARC).

Issues that are resolved by Cumulative Update 6 for Operations Manager 2007 R2 

Symptoms	Scenario
Installation of the OpsMgr agent on AIX 6.1 fails with a missing dependency.	When you install the OpsMgr agent on AIX 6.1 by using the OpsMgr Discovery Wizard or manually, an error is reported about a missing dependency. This dependency is a file from AIX 5.3 that should not be a prerequisite for installing on AIX 6.1.
After a system restart, the OpsMgr agent on Solaris may fail because it cannot find local files that it needs.	The installation process for the OpsMgr agent on Solaris creates a startup entry that does not have a dependency on local file systems being mounted. Therefore, timing variations can cause the agent to run before the local file systems are mounted, with the result that the agent cannot find files that it needs.
On Red Hat Linux version 4 and SUSE Linux version 9, LVM disks are not discovered and monitored.	The inability to see LVM disks occurs on all Red Hat Linux 4 and SUSE Linux 9 operating systems that are monitored by using OpsMgr 2007 R2 CU5.
On AIX, the OpsMgr agent does not report the arguments for monitored processes.	When you create custom monitors by using the CIM class SCX_UnixProcess, the "Parameters" field is always returned as blank on AIX computers.
When Microsoft security update MS12-006 is installed on an OpsMgr management server, all communication from the management server to the OpsMgr agent on Linux or UNIX results in an HTTP 501 error.	Security update MS12-006 made a change in the way data is packaged for transport across SSL/TLS in order to remove a security vulnerability. The change is valid. However, the OpsMgr agent for all Linux/UNIX operating systems makes an incorrect assumption and cannot understand this change. This results in HTTP 501 errors for all communications.
On HP-UX, logical volumes that have more than 127 physical volumes are not discovered and therefore cannot be monitored.	When it discovers logical volumes on an HP-UX operating system, the OpsMgr agent for HP-UX receives an internal error when it has a volume that has more than 127 physical volumes. The error results in the disk being ignored and not discovered or monitored.

[OpsMgr 2007] Powershell Script to list patches / CU applied on SCOM Agents

Here is a short powershell script to determine what is the CU level of all your agent. Launch this code in a powershell shell, connected to your management group.

Cumulative update build numbers with a larger numeric value include the fixes from all previously released cumulative updates. Any version of SCOM 2007 R2 can be updated to a later-version cumulative update.

Note : You cannot uninstall a later-version cumulative update to downgrade to an earlier-version cumulative update.
