Operations Manager Virtualization Support

Microsoft supports running all Operations Manager server features in any physical or virtual environment that meets the minimum requirements that are stated in this document. However, for performance reasons, we recommend that you store the operational database and data warehouse database on a directly attached physical hard drive, and not on a virtual disk. Specifically, virtual computers that are running any Operations Manager server feature must not use any functionality that does not immediately commit all activity on the virtual computer to the virtual hard drive. This includes making use of point-in-time snapshots and writing changes to a temporary virtual hard drive. This is true for every virtualization technology that is used with Operations Manager.

Minimum Screen Resolution Requirements

Operations Manager is optimized for screen resolutions of 1280 x 1024 or larger. The minimum supported screen resolution is 1024 x 768.

Minimum Hardware Requirements

Use the Operations Manager Sizing Helper to determine hardware requirements for each Operations Manager server feature. If you want to install more than one feature on the same computer, use the higher of the recommended hardware requirements for any of the combined features.

[OpsMgr 2012] Is there a bug in the SCOM 2012 Web Availability Templates ?

Michael Humphrey has published on his blog an article that raises the existence of a bug in the Web Availability Templates.

He has set up an availability monitor to query msn, bing, premier.microsoft.com, and technet. He has intentionally put in a mistyped URL, www.msn.cop. Alert is well raised for this inaccessible URL. Then he fixed the typo replacing www.msn.cop by www.msn.com and it's seems that this update is not taken in account even if you force the monitor to an healthy state. Monitor return back to unhealthy with the old URL.

The workaround is make your changes, then export the MP, delete the MP and reimport it. But this action of deleting, then importing a large MP (that was monitoring 40 URL) caused the OpsDB and DW to fall behind for about 30 minutes...

[OpsMgr 2012] Run Remote Desktop from any alert in the Console - Custom MP

I've found the post from Kevin Greene very interesting.

The aim is to enable the RDP connection from any alert within the SCOM Console irregardless of the Windows Server OS Management Pack.

The solution is to create a custom RDP task that will run independently of any management pack but with the same parameters as the 'Windows Server OS MP' RDP task.

SCOM 2012 Servers sizing for a small SCOM 2007 new deployment

For my own job, I've to create a new SCOM 2007 infrastructure (less than 250 servers to monitor - 120 servers in the same domain - 120 servers in 10 others domains).

I've also define 2 screnarios according to the Microsoft recommendations.

• scenario given by Microsoft – small deployment

HW Mini required


Role: Root Management Server• 2 disk RAID 1
• 4 GB RAM
• Dual Proc

Role: Operations Database Server,  & Operations Data Warehouse Server (w/ SRS & Web Console Server)• 6 disk RAID 10 (147GB)
• 4 GB RAM
• Dual Proc

• More secure scenario

The idea is to have a secure infrastructure for all monitored servers and a SCOM 2012 compliantcyto be sure if one day we have to migrate to SCOM 2012 - no new server will be needed.

So here is the minimal requisite for a small SCOM 2012 infrastructure (Minimal Hardware is given since we don't have a the moment any Microsoft recommandations):

SQL DB/DW on a cluster
SQL reporting server on the passive node since cluster is not supported
Servers outside the domain 1 will be linked to MS + RMS (failover) by using certificate
Servers in Domain 1 will be attached to 2 gateways (one for failover)
Console will be installed on a management server
