[OpsMgr 2012 SP1] Update Rollup 2 installation - Clients binaries are not updated on Gateways

You already know that Microsoft has released Update Rollup 2 for System Center Operations Manager 2012 Service Pack 1 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2802159).

Kevin Hollman (MSFT) has published a post to apply Update Rollup 2 (UR2) to OpsMgr 2012 SP1 - you can found his post here.

Perhaps did you already see that Update Rollup 2 does not include update for Gateways. However, Gateways is storing binaries for the client push installation and since the Update Rollup 2 is not applied on Gateways, client sources are not updated !

You'll also have to manually copy the binaries from a Management Server that is up-to-date (In UR2 also).

Here are the files to copy from %ProgramFiles%\System Center 2012\Operations Manager\Server\AgentManagement\<architecture>

[OpsMgr 2007 R2][OpsMgr 2012] Running Operations Manager reports fail with "System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException" error

When running reports using the Operations Manager console, the report fails with the error message below:

Cause

This issue can occur if there is a custom Short DateTime format being used on the console server.

For example, say the system locale on the Operations console server is ENC and the default short DateTime format for ENC locale is dd/MM/yyyy. If this short DateTime format is changed from dd/MM/yyyy to a different format such as yyyy-MM-dd, the error above may occur.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, set the short DateTime format to the system locale's default value.

Custom DateTime formats are not supported with System Center Operations Manager reporting.

Overview

Overview

The Microsoft System Center Monitoring Pack for Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) Server 5.0 monitoring for App-V 5.0 Management, Publishing, and Reporting services installed on Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) servers. To Import the Monitoring Pack into Operations Manager

1. On the Operations Manager management server, open the Microsoft Operations Manager Operations console.
2. On the Operations console, select Administration.
3. Expand the Administration node, security, and select Management Packs
4. Right-click Management Pack, and select Import Management Pack.

[Orchestrator 2012] System Center 2012 – Orchestrator Best Practice Series–Naming Conventions

Jim Britt [MSFT], as promised, has a few blog posts coming on the topic of Best Practices as it relates to System Center 2012 – Orchestrator.

What is Advisor?

System Center Advisor is a cloud service that enables IT Professionals to proactively avoid problems resulting from server configuration issues. It can help you resolve issues faster by providing access  to current and historical configuration data for a deployment. Additionally, System Center Advisor reduces downtime by providing suggestions for improvement and notifying users of key updates specific to their configuration

 How does Advisor work?

The Advisor environment is made up of the Advisor web service, hosted in the cloud, and the on-premise software, installed in your local environment. The on-premise software consists of one gateway and at least one agent. The agent collects data from your server and analyzes it using a set of rules (similar to a management pack in System Center Operations Manager) known collectively as Advisor knowledge. The analyzed data is regularly sent from the agent to the gateway for upload to the Advisor web service. If the data indicates an issue or a deviation from best practices, an alert is generated. By connecting a web browser to the Advisor portal, you can view the alerts and the associated remediation guidance.

What workloads does Advisor support?

Advisor supports analysis of the following workloads:

• Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2:
  • Active Directory
  • Hyper-V Host
  • General operating system
• SQL Server 2008 and later

Operations Manager - UNIX and Linux Monitoring (Management Pack Update) (KB2828653)

Issue 1

The Solaris agent could run out of file descriptors when many multi-version file systems (MVFS) are mounted.

Issue 2

Logical and physical disks are not discoverable on AIX-based computers when a disk device file is contained in a subdirectory.

Issue 3

Rules and monitors that were created by using the UNIX/Linux Shell Command templates do not contain overridableShellCommand and Timeoutparameters.

Issue 4

Process monitors that were created by the UNIX/Linux Process Monitoring template cannot save in an existing management pack that has conflicting references to library management packs.

Issue 5

The Linux agent cannot install on a CentOS or Oracle Linux host by using FIPS version of OpenSSL 0.9.8.

[MMS 2013] Retrieving MMS 2013 Content Sessions using PowerShell

Stefan Stranger has created a PowerShell script which retrieves all sessions of the MMS 2013 and makes it possible to export the result to a csv file using the Export-CSV cmdlet.

[OpsMgr 2007 R2] Powershell script to export all product knowledge for rule and monitor for a specific MP

I've been asked to provide knowledge article to application owner in order to help them to determine what instruction to give to support level one for alert raised by SCOM management pack.

With no access to SCOM console, I didn't find an easy way to do it and I also decided to proceed with a powershell script.

Here are the command line I've written to export all product knowledge for rules and monitors for a specific MP. Create a PS1 file named ExportKnowledgeArticleFromAMP.ps1 and copy paste the command line from this post and go down and click download to get the PS1 file.

Executing the script will create a folder Microsoft.Windows.Server.PrintServer.2012 - 6.0.7004.0 that contains an HTML file for each monitor/rules.

Note :

• The script sometimes return errors on some monitors or rules - I guess the conversion to HTML is failing - but in that case, the impact is that the HTML file is not created for that rule/monitor.
• The script can be easily adapted of courses to run on OpsMgr 2012.

Overview

The System Center Management Pack for Windows Server DNS monitors DNS health, availability, configuration, security, and zone-transfer issues on DNS servers running the Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008, 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 operating systems.

Note This Management Pack is intended to completely replace the functionality of the previous DNS Management Pack, and as such it is not backwards compatible with them. The old and new management packs can live side-by-side, so you can uninstall the old MP’s if/when you are comfortable with the new Management Pack.

[OpsMgr 2012] VSAE – Include File Content

David Allen, has posted on April 3, 2013, an article to show how to include your own vbs, ps1 or JS script in your authored management pack.

The include syntax in this example is $IncludeFileContent/Scripts/MonitoringScript.vbs$, and this is generated based on the path of the file.  In this MP, I stored the VBS file in a folder called Scripts, which is why “Scripts/MonitoringScript.vbs” is added to “IncludeFileContent”.

1. Download and install the msi package.
2. Follow the quick start instructions in the SC2012OM_JEE_Readme.txt.

System Center 2012 - Operations Manager Sizing Helper

1. Save the Operations Manager 2012 Sizing Helper.xls to local storage.
2. Open the Operations Manager 2012 Sizing Helper.xls.
3. In the Security Warning, click "Enable Content". The interactive functions of the sizing helper will not work if macros are not enabled.
